Here are a couple of steps you will need to follow to access the eBenefits portal and, in the end, garner the VA award of benefits letter. Please be advised that it will take around 30 days to receive your Statement of Benefits in the mail. However, once you have requested this, you can go back into the eBenefits portal after around 72 hours and download a copy of this statement and email a copy to me. You do not need to wait for the statement to arrive in the mail.
Veterans and service members must be listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and create a DS login. If a veteran is not in the DEERS system, their local VA Regional Office can assist them. This login is how veterans will access eBenefits, and it remains valid for the rest of their lives.
To access the full range of features eBenefits has to offer, VA recommends that veterans register for DS Logon 2 (Premium). The basic and premium options are at no cost to veterans; however, the premium login provides users with much greater access to their information and allows them to utilize more features than the basic login offers.
Ultimately, veterans can locate their VA award letters in the eBenefits system by logging in and following these steps:
- Clicking on the “Manage” tab
- Clicking on “Documents and Records”
- Clicking on “VA Letters”
- Finding and selecting “Benefit Summary – Veteran Benefits”
- Checking/unchecking different boxes to determine the information included in the downloaded letter (e.g., information about recent periods of military service, service-connected conditions, etc.)
- Click on the blue “Generate Benefits Summary Letter” button
- Review the VA award letter
- Save the letter either physically (click printer icon) or digitally (click “Save” icon)
If we can be of further assistance, let us know by sending an e-mail to admissions@cbet.edu or by calling us directly at (210) 233-1102.
Frequently asked questions
VA Education Benefits are financial assistance programs provided by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to eligible veterans, active-duty service members, and their dependents for the purpose of pursuing higher education or vocational training.
Eligibility for VA Education Benefits primarily depends on the service member’s discharge status and service length. This can include veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and, in some cases, dependents and surviving family members of veterans who died or were disabled by their service.
The VA offers several programs, including Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (Chapter 30), Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606), and more. Other benefits like the Yellow Ribbon Program, Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 35), and Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E, Chapter 31) are also available.
VA Education Benefits cover a wide range of education-related expenses such as tuition and fees, housing, books, supplies, and each program differs in scope. The exact amount of funding and the expenses covered depend on the specific benefit program, length of service, and eligibility criteria.
To apply for VA Education Benefits, start by visiting the Veterans Affairs website at www.va.gov. Select the specific education program for which you’d like to apply and follow the provided instructions. You can also apply through eBenefits or in-person at your local VA regional office.
According to the VA, the period to use education benefits varies depending on the specific program. For example, Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits must be used within 15 years from the last period of active duty, while Montgomery GI Bill benefits expire 10 years after separation for Active Duty (Chapter 30) and 14 years for Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606).
Only the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) allows benefits to be transferred to a qualifying dependent, which includes spouses and children. Transfer of benefits should be done while the service member is still on active duty, and eligibility criteria must be met.
Typically, you cannot use more than one VA education benefit program concurrently. However, you may be eligible to combine different benefits in certain scenarios. For specific guidance, consult the VA or a VA-approved education counselor.
Veterans with service-related disabilities have access to the Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E, Chapter 31) program, which provides vocational rehabilitation and employment assistance. Additionally, the Dependents’ Educational Assistance program (DEA, Chapter 35) may offer benefits to qualifying dependents of such veterans.
For assistance with VA Education Benefits, contact the VA’s Education Call Center at 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) or visit a nearby VA regional office. You can also seek help from a VA-approved education counselor or a Veterans Service Officer.
