Course Description

This course provides medical equipment technicians with a comprehensive foundation in the theory, operation, and servicing of electrosurgical units (ESUs) used in surgical and procedural environments. During the online portion, students develop a thorough understanding of electrosurgical principles, including energy delivery, tissue interaction, and the differences between electrosurgical modality types based on clinical applications. Emphasis is placed on system operation, order of operations, safety features, and installation requirements, as well as routine preventative maintenance, performance monitoring, and adherence to applicable regulatory and safety standards.

The in-person lab builds on this theoretical foundation through hands-on instruction focused on practical operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrosurgical systems. Through guided workshops, demonstrations, and lab exercises, students gain experience identifying common faults, verifying proper system function, and ensuring safety compliance. Upon successful completion, participants will be prepared to support the safe, reliable use of electrosurgical units and effectively maintain these critical systems in clinical settings.
